Scholarships: Wood River Community Centennial Foundation Scholarships (May 2022 WRRH Seniors)
Mary Babel (2 Scholarships for $500.00 each) Scholarship was established in 2021 to honor Mary who truly was a “trailblazer” in the Wood River Community. Working alongside of her family in their businesses and served at one time on the Wood River Rural High Scholarship Committee. This scholarship is established for students entering the music or medical field. Consideration will be given to participation in school and outside activities.
Doug Denman (One Scholarship for $500.00) Scholarship established in 2020 to honor Doug, a graduate of Wood River High with the class of 1965. This scholarship will be an awarded to a student going into the Agriculture field. In making the selection consideration will be given to participation in school and outside activities.
Mark Dibbern (One Scholarship for $500.00). Scholarship established in 2012 to honor Mark. He was a graduate of Wood River Rural High in 1978 where he participated in football, track and FFA. He joined the family farming operation following graduation. This scholarship will be awarded to a student going into Agri Business.
Ernestine Coleman (Two Scholarships for $500.00 Each.) Scholarship established in 2013 to honor Ernestine. Her father, Ernest T. Heim was the Wood River High Superintendent in the 40’s. She graduated from Wood River High in 1946. She attended Nebraska Wesleyan and received her B.A. degree. She received a graduate degree in Literature and doctorate in Educational Psychology at the University of Nebraska. She worked as a school psychologist at Lincoln public Schools. Her family established the scholarship for graduates who planned to study education.
Jamie Gewecke (One Scholarship for $300.00) Scholarship established in 2009 in his memory. Jamie graduated from Northwest High School in 2001 and attended Central Community College. He was employed by Case New Holland and Standard Iron. Jamie enjoyed cars and motorcycles and was a NE Husker Fan. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduate pursuing an agricultural, automotive or technology field of study.
Dean & Pam Kjar (Two Scholarships for $500.00 each) This scholarship was established in 2020 in honor of Dean & Pam Kjar. They moved to Wood River in 1992 and established Double D Plumbing and Heating which they operated until Dean’s death in 2020. Dean thoroughly enjoyed his work because he loved meeting and working with the people of the Wood River community. Dean and Pam were active members of the Wood River Community. This scholarship it to awarded to students entering a trade – electrical, plumbing, HVAC etc.
Maltman Library (One Scholarship for $500.00) This scholarship was established in 2009 to be awarded for a Wood River Senior going into the Education field. Consideration will be given to participation in school and outside activities.
McCumber Family (Two Scholarships for $500.00 each) This Scholarship was established by the Wilbur McCumber Family in 1997. Wilbur was associated with the Bank of Wood River and the Insurance (Heritage Bank and Heritage Insurance. The McCumber children were raised in Wood River and graduates of Wood River High. Consideration will be given to participation in school and outside activities.
Lewetta Russell (One Scholarship for $500.00). This scholarship was established in 1997 by students to honor a beloved teacher (around 1950). She taught drama and journalism, two fields that should be considered when awarding this scholarship. (Take into account High school participation in the fine arts.)
Lola Harnish Scholarship & Application Lola Harnish was a teacher at Lincoln Elementary School at the time of her retirement. Her family established this scholarship for graduating Seniors in Hall County who attended Lincoln Elementary School. Applicants are asked to include a short memory of their memories of Lincoln Elementary. The applications will be submitted to Lincoln Elementary School personnel for selection.
Stanley Alexander/Cement lodge 211 AF&AM (One Scholarship for $500.00) This scholarship was established in 2013. A student of good academic standing and moral character will be selected from the Senior Class. Preference will be given to a student that is related to a Master Mason. The secretary of Cement Lodge now Ashlar Lodge will obtain a list of the senior class members and make the selection.
Curtis Thienel (One scholarship for $ 300.00) Scholarship established in 1996 to honor Curtis’s involvement in the Wood River community. Many of the residential homes built 60 years ago in Wood River were by Thienel Builders (Curt and his sons). This scholarship is for a student going into the building trade.
Linda Thienel (One scholarship for $250.00) Scholarship established in 1998 to honor Linda who operated a child care business for families in Wood River. (Linda was a daughter-in-law to Curtis/spouse of Dave.) This scholarship is for a student going into early childhood studies.
Patrick Wagoner (One scholarship for $500.00) Scholarship established in 2002 in honor of Patrick, an “Agent Orange Baby” who grew up surrounded by a loving family and the children his mother cared for in her child care. This scholarship is for a student going into special education/medical field. Consideration will be given to those who were in Jane’s care.
Dollars for Scholars Money invested with the Wood River Community Centennial Foundation from prior fund raisers and money on hand as of February 3, 2020. The annual earnings determined as of 12/31/20—(yearend) will be applied for scholarships awarded to the graduating seniors the following May.
